NutraMara Conference, 2012
Dr Shane O’Connell and Mr Patrick Quille attended the recent NutraMara Conference, held in the Dublin on the 25 th and 26 th April. NutraMara, a consortium consisting of National University of Ireland Galway, University College Dublin, University College Cork, University of Ulster, Coleraine, University of Limerick and Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown & Moorepark, was established as a multidisciplinary programme aimed at discovering bioactive components from Irish marine sources for use in added value functional food products.
The Conference was well attended with over 120 delegates and provided a two day programme of scientific presentations on the most recent advances in this sector, from national and international presenters. The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, provided the welcome address which set the scene for the Conference and was followed by 25 scientific presentations over the two days.
The scientific sessions were divided into Marine Resource Sustainability, Marine Waste and By-Product Utilisation and Valorisation, Marine Algae – A Source of Food Ingredients and Marine Derived Ingredients as Potential Functional Foods.
The overwhelming message from the Conference was the potential, and actual, value that marine resources can provide. In particular, the utilisation of waste as an added value component was a core discussion topic. These were of particular interest to Shannon ABC, given our involvement in the industrial application of knowledge with our partner companies in this sector.
